Who we are

The Fair Toys Organization e.V. was founded on 14 July 2020 and is a multi-stakeholder initiative with members from the toy industry and civil society. It is committed to upholding labor and human rights and reducing the environmental impact of toy production and aims to bring more transparency to the global supply chains of the toy industry.

The special feature of the association structure of the Fair Toys Organization is a two-chamber system. These two chambers are made up of toy manufacturers, toy retailers and their associations on one side. And civil society organizations, public and church bodies and trade unions on the other.

Overall, however, the Fair Toys Organisation is supported by committed people from a wide range of companies and organizations. The central decision-making body of the association is the 8-member board. It is made up of an equal number of members from civil society and the toy industry.

These are the current members of the Executive Board:

  • Romero Initiative (CIR): Maik Pflaum
  • Catholic Workers' Movement Diocesan Association Eichstätt e.V.: Kurt Schmidt
  • Mission One World: Dr. Jürgen Bergmann
  • Nuremberg Fair Toys Alliance: Helga Riedl
  • HEUNEC Plüschspielwarenfabrik GmbH & Co KG: Barbara Fehn-Dransfeld
  • plasticant mobilo GmbH: Sven Grabosch
  • sigikid, H.Scharrer & Koch GmbH & Co.KG: Axel Gottstein

There is also a full-time team at the Fair Toys Organisation office in Nuremberg, which currently has three employees. We work together to achieve the goals of the initiative.

How we work

The basis of all work is the Code of Conduct of the Fair Toys Organization (PDF). All members agree to the code as the basis for the evaluation of processes in the company and in the supply chain.

In order to achieve the goals of the Fair Toys Organization, the process procedure and plays a central role. It is the responsibility of the company to continuously improve social and environmental standards at its own sites and in the supply chain. The process procedure consists of four steps, which the members of the "Manufacturers" group go through, with the central element of the Fair Performance Check (FPC). The office provides the companies with intensive support at all stages of the process.

Detailed information on this can be found in the FPC manual (PDF) and the FTO strategy paper (PDF).

What we do

Advice & support

Together with external experts and our cooperation partners, we offer free webinars and training courses on all sustainability-related topics, depending on the needs of our members. More than 100 of our members' employees have taken part in the training courses so far. In addition, the office provides all members with intensive, needs-oriented support and advice. Useful internal and external documents and handouts relating to due diligence obligations are made available digitally in our own Fair Toys library. This provides our members with the necessary practical knowledge to anchor the approach of social and ecological responsibility in the company step by step.

Country projects

The Fair Toys Organization would like to gradually expand its commitment in the most important production countries in the toy industry in order to achieve impact and improvements for workers in the production facilities. We are currently active in China and Vietnam. In Vietnam, we have been working with a renowned civil society organization since 2023. Since 2024, the Fair Toys Organization has also been cooperating with QIMA to raise awareness of fair working conditions among workers in Chinese production facilities. So far, more than 500 of our members' workers have been trained in both countries.

Risk analysis tool

The Fair Toys Organization offers all manufacturers a free, automated tool for human rights and environmental risk analysis. The risk analysis is a central element of the German Supply Chain Duty of Care Act and the European Supply Chain Directive. This tool was developed with our cooperation partner, the Mittelstand Digital Zentrum Franken, specifically for the risks of the toy industry. It enables members to identify and address their supply chain risks more quickly and systematically.

Supply chain transparency

The Fair Toys Organization has set itself the goal of increasing transparency in the supply chains of the toy industry and this also includes the external supply chain transparency of our members. Information on the supply chains of the individual members can therefore be found in the company profile on our website and in the results reports of the Fair Performance Check. The overview shows the sourcing countries (TIER 1) of the FTOerts and our cooperation partners, we offer free webinars and training courses on all sustainability-related topics, depending on the needs of our members. Insert map here (file follows)

Fair Toys seal

FAIR TOYS SEAL for social and ecological responsibility in the production of toys The Fair Toys seal recognizes companies that meet the requirements and criteria of the Fair Performance Check to a high degree. This looks at the extent to which the company credibly assumes social and ecological responsibility for its supply chain. It stands for suitable structures and measures within a company to minimize and eliminate risks and grievances relating to labour and human rights violations in its supply chains and to work on improving its environmental performance. Companies that fulfill the six minimum requirements of the Fair Performance Check and receive at least 75% of the points to be achieved are allowed to use the Fair Toys seal. Currently, these are the companies Heunec GmbH und Co KG and plasticant mobilo GmbH. You can find the exact results of all companies and more information about the seal on our seal website https://app.imero.io/p/6405ad1be5d45a3ed76244f0/

FAQ

Why is the Fair Toys Organization credible?

The Fair Toys Organization is supported by various stakeholder groups: toy retailers, toy producers and civil society organizations and institutions that have been campaigning for labour and human rights as well as environmental issues for years. If they come to a joint statement or assessment, it has a very high level of credibility.

What is the benefit for me as a manufacturer?

Many manufacturers are confronted with similar problems. The Fair Toys Organization also sees itself as a learning platform for developing solutions. In addition, the joint approach of several companies increases the ability to influence producers and can save costs.

How does this benefit me as a retailer?

By becoming a member of the Fair Toys Organization, a toy retailer documents that fair working conditions, ecological sustainability and the continuous improvement of social and environmental standards in the toy industry and in its product range are of central importance to it. This also creates transparency for you as a retailer.

How do customers find out that I am involved in the Fair Toys Organization?

Members can communicate their membership publicly. Customers can find out about the commitment of the member companies in the company profiles (published only in the German version of this website). By awarding a seal to manufacturers, the commitment of the entire company to fair working conditions and ecological sustainability is also recognizable to consumers on products

What do I have to do to get the seal?

As a toy manufacturer, you apply for admission to the FTO. A step-by-step process then starts, which is intended to continuously prepare you for the award of the seal and at the same time ensure that the required standards are progressively met (see FTO strategy paper and FPC_Manual (PDF-Download)). This process includes the following elements:

  • Location assessment (FTO questionnaire)
  • Action plan (approx. annually, together with the FTO)
  • Fair Performance Check (approx. annually by the FTO)
  • Fair Toys seal

As a toy retailer, you can communicate your membership of the Fair Toys Organization, but the awarding of a seal is not intended. You act as a multiplier and spread and promote the idea of the Fair Toys Organization.

What will it cost me?

The annual membership fee for members from civil society varies depending on the size of the organization. For manufacturing companies, membership fees are based on toy sales. You can find more detailed information in our membership fee regulations (PDF-Download, German).

How do I become a member?

You apply for membership of the Fair Toys Organization. To do so, you must submit a membership application (PDF-Download, German) and complete a short questionnaire (PDF-Download, German). The board then decides on your membership by majority vote.

How is the association financed?

The personnel and project costs of the Fair Toys Organization are currently financed on the one hand by membership fees. On the other hand, grants from government agencies or foundations are also used. Until the end of 2024, the Fair Toys Organization received financial support from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development, among others.

How is the seal awarded and by whom?

The Fair Toys Organization awards a company seal, not an individual product seal. The company is therefore considered as a whole. In the case of particularly broad-based companies, the seal refers only to the toy division. The basis for awarding the seal is the assessment of the head office as part of the Fair Performance Check. Further information can be found in the strategy paper and the FPC manual

How long is the seal valid? Does it have to be renewed annually?

The Fair Performance Check is carried out approximately once a year at the member company and decides on the continued use of the seal. Further information can be found in the strategy paper and the FPC manual (PDF-Download).
